The Lost Decade or the Decade of Loss?

And so, as all things come to pass, we arrive at a new decade, waving goodbye gracefully to all those years and moments that intertwined our lives for long, long, long ten years. As all new things must have a new name too, we start to wonder how to call these new set of numbers that we will keep on writing on and on in our calendars and checks for ten more years, that is, if we get that far.

How to call the 2010’s (tens? Teens? Tens Redux?)? What will be the new trends? Technologies? Celebrities and leaders that will guide us to a better future (hopefully)?. As much as we try to look forward with hope for a new beginning we are now asked to face the past and define, what the hell was with the aught’s (00’s)?

The millennium and the decade set off with a mixture of anxiety and fear, the bug of the millennium and the Nostradamus prophesies spiced by J-Lo’s and Clinton’s recent affairs. Just fresh out of a so-so decade, in which we saw the end of communism, the supremacy of America and therefore of the market (our recently crowned God). For about a year and 9 moths of the same old same old we were brought back to reality by that trip with planes. And then what?

The decade that I became an adult and learned to make (an decently watch) movies is a mystery to me now, and I predict will stay so for some time. As I grew older and older and lost bit by bit the freshness and hope of youth so seems the rest of the world too. Trying to balance out collective consciousness of what we must understand, respect and achieve as a human race was not easy. Unnecessary wars were fought, countless lives lost in battles or on words of opportunistic religious people, and a lot of these feelings were put on art to be viewed and remembered for centuries to come. The highest and most accessible level of communication continued to be that of the 2 hours or so filled with image and sound on a dark theater, and I am thankful that it was not ashamed to show its real and raw face every other time.

If there is a feeling that can be expressed now as looking back at these movies and moments is a certainly the feeling of longing. For, hell, we finally lost our innocence. In movies and in the World.

So the question comes back: What was that we achieved in 10 years? Difficult to answer, especially if you are one of those who thinks (or don’t) that we as people have nothing to achieve, that it is all a sick merry-go round from hell, so we should all just try and enjoy the ride by not vomiting words too much. You do have a point too. But I have a sick stomach and so I must ask for the controller to slow down the speed, only if for 15 minutes so that I can write down my thoughts and compose myself again.

I am not one to compare events with its late born movie twin, but I do have a sense that the world inspire artists, and that if we are in this merry go round we shpuld wanna be in one with a interesting view.

So, once again, the blockbusters and arthouses played near or far away from you. You might have seen 5, 10, 100, 1000 (more?), movies of the past 10x12 months. I lost my count, but it was something between 1.000 and 2.000, not shameful at all. If you are one of those that saw more than I did then I bet you have your own list of what was best, if you are one of those who saw less them 200, take a time to read what I talk about below, and you knight find yourself inspired by new pieces.

Lists are not rules, but inspirations. When I see a well done and tought list I feel like looking for the movies I never had the chance or didn’t want to watch. So take your time, revise our decade, it might take a year or more so for us to plunge in the 10’s, and I expect that the merry go round plays a more upbeat and hopeful tune. I kid myself sometimes...
